setting
Index was once a small and close-knit community, but the town located on the western side of Washington state has grown in recent years beyond anyone's expectations. It is the ideal place for those who work in Seattle but can't afford the city's high real estate prices, and for others the natural beauty attracts them to the town. And Index truly is a beautiful place - surrounded by thick evergreen trees, tall mountains and glistening rivers and lakes. While weather is typically rainy with overcast skies even this does nothing to take away from the beauty of the town, and it is only highlighted further when the heavy snow graces the town and caps the mountains in winter. To many, Index would seem like a paradise. And yet lurking beneath this visual beauty there is more to this town than anyone might ever imagine...

Current Time in Index, Washington:
rules
PLAYBYS: Sims from the games Sims 2, 3 and 4 are used to visually represent player’s original characters (no characters from within the franchise are allowed). But, you do not need these games to join and roleplay! If you wish, you can post a thread in our out of character / general forum and list as many physical details about your character as you wish. The members of Index will happily try and make a character for you, and you can choose which one you feel best fits your vision.

AVATARS: Avatars should display your characters face clearly and should be at least 200 pixels tall, and 200 pixels wide.

THREADING & POSTING: When threading with multiple characters, it is important that you post only when it is your turn. This can be acheived by taking note of who has posted before you, and remember you are to always post after them. If you were the thread starter, then it is your turn after the final person has joined your thread.

When creating a thread you are required to place a tag before the title. Here are a list of types of thread you can create and how to tag each one:

[Open] Anyone is welcome to join your thread, with no limit on the number of characters.
[Open - #] Anyone is welcome to join your thread, but there is a limit on the number of characters who can join. Replace the # with how many extra characters you will allow to join your thread.
[Private] Only specific characters can join your thread.
[Closed] This tag should be used for threads that only involve your character.

ACTIVITY: To keep threads moving, people are encouraged to post within three days when it is their turn. If you do not post within three days, and you have not asked people to wait for you, it is possible you will be skipped. Keep in mind this is just a suggestion. While we'd love for everyone to be active every day, we understand that real life and other hobbies are just as important, if not more. We want you to be active because you want to be, not because a rule is telling you to be.

MATURITY RATING: Public threads should all be PG. If roleplayers above the age of 18 wish to post content that could be could be considered graphic then it should be hidden from view using the [hide] [/hide] code, which will enable only those in the threads and administrators to view the content.

I didn't pace. I didn't move at all. Still as the dead, it was what made my kind so exceptionally well at stealth.

I had been watching him for some time. I didn't exactly check up on him for myself, I didn't even really do it for Logan. The first time I had come by to pick up that photo of his spawn was going to be the only time. But I had seen some things that night... Some things I couldn't explain. Vincent wasn't just fucking crazy, there was something about him that was pulling me in. Like a magnet, like a drug that I just had to come back for more. I had been done with him for years, but something had changed in him. Something... I couldn't explain.

''Does it please you?'' I gasped at the sound of the voice. It belonged to a woman... To several women. Several tones coming through in perfect harmony. She spoke precisely, every word enunciated with precision, with intent. I didn't move, a feeling came over me, a feeling of... Inferiority? Not a single soul had brought out that feeling in a long time, and I was unsure of how to deal with it. I was unsure of how to show it... Or even if I should.

Does what please me? I whispered, suddenly feeling a wave of fear rush over me as I considered turning around to face my companion. I pushed through, slowly turning, eyes widening, fear consuming as I realized the body in front of me was Vincent. I watched his hands as he slipped a ring onto his finger, and before my very eyes, like scales flipping on his skin he... Transformed... From man to woman, right in front of me stood someone completely different.

''Watching him. Watching me.''

Yes...

''Have you wondered why?''

She stepped forward, her hand reaching up to touch my cheek like a mother would touch the cheek of a sleeping child. Chills ran up from my limbs, connecting at my spine, causing me to shudder. Ye-... Yes... She smiled, but that smile disappeared when her thumb moved up to wipe a bloody tear from my cheek. Curiosity lit up in her eyes.

''Why do you care for his kin?''

I don't... I... I knew I was getting something out of the deal. But I couldn't form the words. ''Because you still care for the wolf?'' No. I replied sharply, watching as she clawed her fingernails down her forearm and my fangs clicked into place at the sight of her blood... But more importantly, at the smell. It was so strong. ''This is the wolfs blood. It is your purpose to feed on this blood, his blood, but still, you choose his human counterpart. Why?'' If my heart could race, it would have been. The scent, the sight, her encouragement. But when I tried to lunge forward for a taste, I couldn't move. And her voice had gone from curious, to infuriated. ''Answer my question.''

Humans are-

''Humans are not your purpose!''

Her skin changed again, and Vincent was standing before me once more.

''I am.'' His voice came through this time, and before I could register what had even just happened, or even think about who I had just spoken to, he was gone.

She was gone.

This takes place the very next day.

My eyes were open only a sliver, and waterline raw and red as I sat slumped on the sofa staring at nothing. The same dirty and stained wifebeater that I'd worn since Monday sat cockeyed, twisted around my torso. My eyelids quickly shut at the sight of light coming through the curtains, illuminating the fog my endless cigarettes had filled the room with. I opened one eye, watching as swirls of smoke danced through the light.

My fingernails were dirty, hair falling over my forehead and lips dry and cracked. Broken glass from a lamp sat scattered in the corner of the room. I watched the light lick the corners and edges of each reflective piece. Like laser beams they seared through my cornea sending a shooting pain throughout my skull. I quickly shut both eyes again, tight, tighter, so tight I nearly tuned out that ringing that had gone on what seemed like nonstop since three in the morning. But this time when it stopped, it didn't immediately start again. Nothing but static came through the answering machine.

Both eyes opened.

''It's not them.'' milky white hands slithered down my chest as the words were whispered in my ear from behind me. How do you know? my voice had no power to it, coming out as nothing but airy words to half-assedly fill an empty room. ''Because they're both dead.'' She giggled, biting at my ear before removing her hands from my skin.

Both eyes opened.

A loud beep ended the painful ringing. ''Aye Logan, it's me, Peter. I've been callin' man, and I hate to do this over the phone, but we had to let you go. Your position is already filled. Stop bye whenever yer alive to pick up yer last check. Keep in touch brother.'' One last beep and I picked up an empty bottle and chucked it straight for the phone. It, and the table it stood on fell to the floor, yanking the chord from the wall.

I immediately positioned myself back in my spot and leaned my head back.

Both eyes closed.

If you're confused... The paragraph directly below the first ''both eyes opened'' is a hallucination. Everything else was real.

9:00 A.M. - Same Day

My left hand sat pressed against the wall under the shower head. My head slumped forward under the running water as all of my hair gathered to one point aiming towards the drain, sending loud lumps of water to the shower floor. It dripped off the tip of my nose, funneled down my chin, and seemed to split off around my ears, most of it rushing through my sideburns. ''Stop by whenever yer alive...'' Why those words? Why that choice? Of all the ways to communicate what he wanted to communicate, that's the word he chose.

I tilted my head back, letting the water rinse my face, and brought my hands up to wipe it all away and push my hair back. My forearm caught my eye, and I stared at the claw marks, absolutely fucking numb to my lack of memory.

I'd spent an insane amount of time looking in the mirror. Each hand firmly planted on either side of the sink, staring blankly at my reflection before finally switching on my shaver and getting rid of the beard that had taken over, feeling even more disgusted as more of my true face was revealed. I switched off the buzzer, carelessly placing it behind the faucet before reaching for my comb.

I gave myself one last look before turning on the faucet to splash water on my face, and grabbed a towel to wipe it all away before heading towards the door. I zipped up my hoodie and looked through the peephole, unable to see anything other than a suit and tie before finally opening the door.

''Vincent Byrne?''

Yeah?

''Detective Peterson, I don't suppose you remember me?''

I frowned, but it disappeared as quickly as it had appeared as I realized I didn't fucking remember much of anything anymore. I glanced at his badge, not long enough to actually see anything, but long enough to know he was legit.

What can I do for you?

''You can answer a few questions, if you have the time.''

Now's really not the be-

''I can always come back with a warrant.''

I took in a deep breath, staring just as intently at him as he was at me. A few seconds passed, but it felt like a lot fucking longer before I finally let out that deep breath of air and stepped aside, staring at the corner of broken glass as he entered. His gaze went exactly where mine was, and then to the floor by the couch were several empty bottles of jack sat clustered and tilted over.

''Long night?''

Not long enough.

He nodded, adjusted his tie, stuck his hands in his pockets and just stared at me. This look of content on his face, it was persistent, it didn't falter. Another long pause took over and I could feel my eyebrows lowering, nearly ready to ask him what the fuck his problem was before he finally spoke up.

''Your neighbors are nice people. Good people. I had a nice long talk with Dianne just the other day. And she had some interesting things to say about you.''

I watched his eyes dart towards my forearm and then back to my face. I quickly pulled my sleeve down and moved over to the couch to sit down with a cigarette. Dianne's nice, yeah. I muttered before sparking my lighter and igniting the end of my cigarette. She's also seventy-four years old and still gossips like she's a teenager. The more fabricated the story, the more attention she gets.

''Really. See... I didn't get that impression.''

''What I did get was a pretty interesting story. You know, most lies are based off of elements of truth.''

Just because some people believe something, that doesn't make it true.

''I can agree with that.'' He replied as he began moving forward to take a seat.

Don't sit there! My eyes immediately widened at my own outburst. I mean... The other chair. Another pause took place as he stared at me before moving over to the other chair and sat down.

''How many people you got livin' here?''

Just me. I cleared my throat, And uh, I reached up to scratch my jaw, My cousin. When he can be bothered to sleep here.

''Any idea when he'll be comin' by? I'd like to have a talk with him too.''

I haven't seen him in weeks.

''Is that common? Him not showin' up for weeks at a time?''

No.

I mean, yeah sometimes, I guess.

He lives by his own set of rules, I guess.

''Do you guys get along?'' He nodded, but there was a flash of a frown as he asked, and I found myself unsure of how to answer that question.

I-

''From the way you talk about him I get the sense you guys might not.''

We're like brothers. We can get along great, but yeah, sometimes he pisses me off. It's normal.

''Yeah, yeah.''

He nodded as he leaned back.

''But here's the thing.''

''His coworkers and friends haven't seen him in a while. You know anything about that?''

I just told you, he comes and goes as he pleases. I'm not his fucking keeper.

''You sure about that?'' This time the frown on his face stayed.

Yeah.

Our conversation paused, again, and he just stared at me for what felt like forever, again. And just like that, he stopped. ''Well.'' He broke eye contact and looked around the room, this time glancing at the knocked over table and phone scattered across the floor before moving his eyes back to mine.

''You 'been doing some landscaping?''

No. I replied quickly without thought.

''You mind if I take a look out back?''

Yes.

A more brief pause came this time, and he slightly tilted his head. ''Is there somethin' out there you don't want me to see?''

No. I just think if you wanna snoop around, you better go get that warrant. I stood up and moved towards the door, turned the handle, and opened it. I stood off to the side, this time staring at him the same way he'd been staring at me and waited.

He stood up, adjusted his tie one last time and gave me one last look before stepping outside. ''I'll be in touch.'' were his last words before I closed the door.
