setting
Index was once a small and close-knit community, but the town located on the western side of Washington state has grown in recent years beyond anyone's expectations. It is the ideal place for those who work in Seattle but can't afford the city's high real estate prices, and for others the natural beauty attracts them to the town. And Index truly is a beautiful place - surrounded by thick evergreen trees, tall mountains and glistening rivers and lakes. While weather is typically rainy with overcast skies even this does nothing to take away from the beauty of the town, and it is only highlighted further when the heavy snow graces the town and caps the mountains in winter. To many, Index would seem like a paradise. And yet lurking beneath this visual beauty there is more to this town than anyone might ever imagine...

Current Time in Index, Washington:
rules
PLAYBYS: Sims from the games Sims 2, 3 and 4 are used to visually represent player’s original characters (no characters from within the franchise are allowed). But, you do not need these games to join and roleplay! If you wish, you can post a thread in our out of character / general forum and list as many physical details about your character as you wish. The members of Index will happily try and make a character for you, and you can choose which one you feel best fits your vision.

AVATARS: Avatars should display your characters face clearly and should be at least 200 pixels tall, and 200 pixels wide.

THREADING & POSTING: When threading with multiple characters, it is important that you post only when it is your turn. This can be acheived by taking note of who has posted before you, and remember you are to always post after them. If you were the thread starter, then it is your turn after the final person has joined your thread.

When creating a thread you are required to place a tag before the title. Here are a list of types of thread you can create and how to tag each one:

[Open] Anyone is welcome to join your thread, with no limit on the number of characters.
[Open - #] Anyone is welcome to join your thread, but there is a limit on the number of characters who can join. Replace the # with how many extra characters you will allow to join your thread.
[Private] Only specific characters can join your thread.
[Closed] This tag should be used for threads that only involve your character.

ACTIVITY: To keep threads moving, people are encouraged to post within three days when it is their turn. If you do not post within three days, and you have not asked people to wait for you, it is possible you will be skipped. Keep in mind this is just a suggestion. While we'd love for everyone to be active every day, we understand that real life and other hobbies are just as important, if not more. We want you to be active because you want to be, not because a rule is telling you to be.

MATURITY RATING: Public threads should all be PG. If roleplayers above the age of 18 wish to post content that could be could be considered graphic then it should be hidden from view using the [hide] [/hide] code, which will enable only those in the threads and administrators to view the content.

The wind gusted, spattering misty Cascadic rain against their faces. Alex found it difficult not to yearn for the Mediterranean on days like this.

Of course, my accent often catches people by surprise. I am from Greece, though, I have lived in the United States for the last few years.

Alex studied her face as she contemplated his words. It was an old habit -- he often caught himself doing it in moments of calm during parties or, lately, while sitting alone in the myriad of places he had tarried in the years since he lost Nyssa. He could tell by the way her eyes danced that she was intelligent and curious.

In the distance, the visitors were beginning to take their seats. Alex nodded to her question.
The ceremony is beginning soon. Let’s find a seat. Alex pulled the case from under his arm and held it in one hand. Have you come here alone, then?

Walking nearer the crowd, he felt increasingly uneasy and mentally steadied himself against the sensation. He felt the presence of the wolf, lurking somewhere in the distance, but then he also began to detect the lingering influence of a vampire in the crowd around him.

Fuck. What kind of place is this? I haven’t felt this much supernatural influence since Newham.

He felt a warm hand on his cheek and all of the sensation disappeared. Alex sighed with relief. Since Budapest, Alex had become supersensitive to magic, and only she could protect Alex from being overwhelmed by it. He knew it was safe to put his faith -- and his life -- in her hands. He sat down in the back row, gesturing to Gwyneth to take the seat beside him.

My hair was no longer damp; it was drenched. The umbrella I had brought had been pointless and tedious since the rain seemed to be almost parallel to the ground. I wanted to pay my respects to Mr. Redling, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t wait to get back home and put on sweats and have Hugo prepare me some hot chocolate or tea.

I can’t say I’ve been there, though I’ve often wanted to go. It seems lovely. In fact, I couldn’t imagine many reasons to pull me away, but everyone had their story to tell. I had my own, the story that had brought my family from Fredericia to the dry desert of California, and now here.

Yes, I haven’t been in this area for too long. I don’t have many companions here, I explained as I followed him. After pointlessly brushing the beds of water from the chair I took a seat adjacent to my new acquaintance and listened to the ceremony as much as I could. The pastor gave a sermon about kindness, and it fell awkwardly on me. It was generic, easy, even if Tristan had been such a kind man. It should have been appropriate, but something about it felt indifferent. I didn’t feel actual warmth from the words until, oddly enough, his ex-wife stood up to speak. She spoke about how he had remained a vigilant friend despite his reasons to resent her, she spoke about how he always kept his friends in line, and kept everyone on their toes morally, but also how he was able to do it in such a kind way. It was no surprise to me that my father and mother stood up and left at that point. I was embarrassed for them, disappointed in them, but I was not surprised.

I had hoped for a few more words with mom, but it was evident that it wouldn’t happen. The pastor resumed his final words and the ceremony was over quicker than I’d imagined. Folks began to stand up, hugging and shaking each others’ hands, but no one was “out of place”. No one wailed, no audible cries. It was something that I hadn’t missed about the kind of people my parents were surrounded by. Composure, appearance, perception were more important than your emotions with these people. I frowned, even though I couldn’t cry myself. I hadn’t been that close even if I was sorry to hear.

Thank you for sitting with me. Are you in town for long? I said once I had stood up, looking around to make sure there was no one that I would feel the need to speak to before leaving.

Alex observed the funeral service with a solemn face, but his mind was still parsing the flood of arcane sensations. He toyed with the ebony box in his hands, running his fingers over the hinges and around the beveled edges. He almost missed Gwen's question. Alex glanced around and noticed that the crowd was beginning to stand.

I've only just been considering staying in town for a while, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea... Alex furrowed his brow and stared at the coffin for too long, thinking.

Perhaps I should. I only hope the town is as friendly as you are, Gwen. Now if you'll excuse me for just a moment... He gave her a reassuring smile, hoping to compensate for his suddenly solemn mood.

Alex opened the case in his hands and revealed a solid silver rose, meticulously detailed, resting in a bed of red velvet. He weaved his way through the crowd of people towards the casket and waited in line with those who were saying their last goodbyes.

When it was Alex's turn, he placed the rose among the other flowers. I hope you found the peace you deserve.

Alex returned to Gwen. Can you recommend a hotel? If I am to stay, I should make my preparations.

I know he was a stranger, and I was likely just making small talk, but it seemed enough small talk that I was invested. We had skirted around the idea of where he lived, and I didn’t want to pry, but I was curious about where he lived now. Was it a one day trip? Maybe it was rather morbid of me, but our current setting had put my mind in a very morbid place. I worried, what kinds of tragedies could stem from another? A butterfly effect where one person had kept their composure at the funeral until they get in the car, they’re driving, and the moment hits at the worst time, and they’re involved in a wreck. Did everyone else do this sort of thing, or was it just me?

I think it’s just like any other town, you have your heroes and your villains, I said, although, even though I’d been here for a while, there hadn’t been that many people I’d met. I missed my old co-workers, even though we’d never been all that close. I think it was just sheer loneliness. My…. love interest - someone who would be seen as a monster by most but he had actually been my hero, and there was no way to argue that. I think if you have a long journey, it would be best to stay, I said, before he left carrying the box. My curious eyes were trained on it, and I was impressed when I saw the contents. It was an unusual gesture, but a beautiful one, and I wondered if it was just something nice he’d seen, as a man, thinking that men aren’t generally the type for flowers. Whether it was the intention or not, I liked the idea of it, the symbolism of the strength of the silver but the delicacy of the rose.

I had no flowers or anything of my own, so I just sat there, hands under my thighs, not wanting to remain there, but not wanting to move to leave. By this point I was used to the rain, and I just watched as the crowd began to thin. I found myself surprisingly happy when Alex returned.

I know of a bed and breakfast, I think it’s not too far from here.

Alex nodded, A bed and breakfast? Sounds lovely. Maybe I'll see you around town. It was very nice to meet you, Gwen.

Alex walked down the hill to his rented Malibu, glancing back to the grave one last time, before pulling out and leaving.
